Packing Tips for Moving

Packing Tips for Moving

The first few days and weeks in a new home can be frustrating because until you get everything out of the moving boxes and put away, it’s hard to find anything. But you can make it easier by taking the time to pack carefully and label everything. Most of us only move house a few times in our life, so we don’t gain a lot of experience with it. But experienced movers learn all the packing tips for moving the hard way. Most people who have moved a few times have at least one horror story of shoddy boxes breaking because they didn’t get proper home moving boxes, things spilling inside boxes, dishes breaking because they weren’t protected, overfilling large moving boxes and being unable to lift them, and other mishaps.

But all of these things can be avoided. Packing your home moving boxes well protects your possessions, and labelling them means you can find your things. If you learn from experienced home movers, you can avoid any mishaps and settle into your new home quickly and easily.

Our Top 5 Packing Tips for Moving

Here are a few of the top tips to make your arrival in your new home go smoothly with minimal frustration.

  1. Don’t overload boxes. Be aware of how much weight you are putting into each box. It helps to spread heavy items such as books between several home moving boxes. Use large moving boxes for bulky but lightweight items such as duvets and pillows.
  2. Use proper home moving boxes. Using sturdy, plastic boxes is no doubt one of our top-priority packing tips for moving house. It’s tempting to try to save money by using boxes stores are getting rid of, but those are really single-use products. They are made cheaply to be used one time only. When a store is discarding them, they’ve probably been soiled by spilt food or liquids or damaged by how they’ve been handled. You save nothing if you have to replace possessions that break when the box falls apart.
  3. Organize boxes by room. Don’t mix unrelated items. Have boxes for kitchen things, boxes for each bedroom, etc. Label each box with the room where it belongs, and then put it in that room as soon as practical when you arrive at your new home.
  4. List the contents of each box. It takes a little more time when you are packing, but you’ll gain that time back when you are unpacking. One way to do this is to number each of your home moving boxes, and then create a master list where you itemize the contents of each. Many people learn the hard way that sticking the list on the box doesn’t work well. The list tends to come off in the move.
  5. Pack according to priority. With kitchen things, for example, pack the dishes and gadgets that you don’t use often together and put the most vital things together. Pack your cold weather and warm weather clothes into separate boxes. If everything from some rooms fits into large moving boxes, put the things you will need most urgently at the top of the box. That means you don’t have to dig around for what you need.
