How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving

How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving

There’s an art to packing, as anyone who has moved house enough times can tell you. Some things are pretty easy to pack well, but packing fragile items to move requires some extra care and attention. This is true even if you are just moving in Dublin. Whether you do the moving yourself or hire professional movers, no one can guarantee that a box won’t get dropped.

You can, however, pack vases, ornaments, glassware, ceramics, and other easily broken items using these pro tips on how to pack fragile items for moving.

    • It’s all about layering. Your fragile items need layers of protection against impact and dampness. But those layers have to be carefully chosen. Your home moving kit should include a few types of material for wrapping delicate items.
    • Consider if the surface of the item is vulnerable to scratches and scrapes. Hand-painted ceramics, for example, can be easily scratched. Glass, on the other hand, is very fragile but not as vulnerable to surface damage. If the item is painted and you are especially worried about protecting the paint, you can use acid-free archival paper.
    • Newspaper is a common inner layer for many breakables, but it isn’t the best. All that ink can damage some items and will definitely be messy when you are packing and unpacking. You are better off leaving newspaper out of your home moving kit and going with wrapping paper and bubble wrap for your inner layer.
    • Once your item is wrapped in paper or bubble wrap, secure that layer with sturdy packing tape.
    • Your next layer should be thick and soft. The best part is, you can both be environmentally responsible and save time and money. Wrap the item again with towels, bedding or even clothes.
    • If the fragile item would be destroyed by moisture, put it inside a plastic bag and seal or tie the bag shut. You might get a dry day for moving, but in Dublin you can’t count on that!
    • Line your boxes for moving with a duvet or put a bulky jumper or winter coat at the bottom of the box.
    • You’ll also need something to fill the space because your fragile items should not rattle around inside your boxes for moving. That increases the risk of breakage. You can use clothing or towels here or crumpled wrapping paper or bubble wrap. Styrofoam peanuts have been popular for this purpose, but they aren’t the best for the environment.
    • Label the boxes with fragile items clearly on all sides.
    • When you pack your car or moving van, be sure to put the boxes of fragile items in a safe place. Do not put them at the bottom or anywhere they can move around. If you take them in the car, don’t leave them unsecured on a seat. Place them on the floor or secure them with a seatbelt.

Once you arrive in your new place, make sure to put these delicate items in a safe place while you deal with unpacking and settling in. That can be a chaotic time!
