I got a good piece of advice from an old manager about taking part in business meetings. He said ‘Sometimes its not what you say, its what you don’t say that will set you apart’. With this in mind, I figured its important to know how to pack but also what not to do when packing. Here are some of the commonly made mistakes that can make moving house and packing to a little more hassle than it should.
Don’t take everything – detox your stuff – Every year gyms all over the world are packed with people looking to detox and purge their bodies of the excess of December’s Christmas partying. Moving house is the perfect opportunity to detox your house and purge all the unwanted items collected over the years. Locate your nearest recycling centre here and find out exactly what you can take along. Don’t forget your local charity shop or find out if a school nearby is running a jumble sale. You can also put things up on jumbletown.ie where the interested parties must collect from you.
Don’t go solo, get help – Unless you’ve been living in a minimalist one room apartment you are going to need help moving your stuff. Particularly if your new house is a bit of a drive away. Call in some favours and get some help.
Get enough boxes – Make sure you have adequate supply of boxes and packing supplies for the move. There’s nothing worse than scrounging around for plastic bags during the final wave of packing. Cardboard boxes are not your only option. Buska can supply you with an ample amount of heavy duty Buska boxes and other packing supplies for moving house.
Pack early and often – You have more stuff than you think. Start packing little used items well in advance of the move. Keep chipping away until a few days out, set aside some essentials to get you thru the last day or so and pack away everything else
Have a list – Make a list, check it twice… It will help.
Are your breakages covered – Check your home insurance to see if moving house is covered and how they treat things damaged in a move. Buska boxes may prevent some of these breakages.
Create a survival bag – When you set aside some things for the last few days before the move (See #4) pack a separate travel case with a days’ worth of clothes, toothbrush, soap etc. You never know what might happen in transit.
Measure the new room dimensions – Will your stuff fit in the new house? Just make sure if you’re going to the trouble of taking your L-shaped couch or super king bed with you, it will get in the door and fit in your new room
Give your new address to people before you move– When you’re making your list, include a section for everybody who needs to know you’ve moved – the bank, utility providers, insurers and the likes
Use the right stuff – Last thing you want to have to do is clean up a mess the day you’re moving house. You can eliminate the risk of boxes tearing and the bottom falling out of bags by ordering yourself some heavy duty Buska boxes.
Take charge of your valuables – Don’t take the chance, move your valuables yourself. Insurance may replace some value but nothing can replace sentimental value and memories
